Ngwe Saung Beach
Ngwe Saung is located 55 kilometers away from Pathein. Normally it takes 1 – 2 hours to go from Pathein to Ngwe Saung by bus. Several years ago, Ngwe Saung was not well-known. Not much people came to Ngwe Saung and it was a pretty wild beach. Nowadays, Ngwe Saung has more visitors, hotels and other services has been established.
Overall, it is good time to visit Ngwa Saung. The beach is a nice place to avoid bustling and crowded atmosphere of Yangon. Here travelers can enjoy isolated atmosphere, refreshing air, and take part in activities like snorkeling and elephant riding.
Like Ngapali Beach, Ngwe Saung Beach is also one of best attractions in Myanmar. Some may prefer Ngapali Beach over Ngwe Saung, however, others consider Ngapali to be so expensive despite of being slightly better. In any cases, it’s your decision to make.
With all of that information cleared, it’s time to get onto the main business: how to travel from Bagan to Ngwe Saung. Well… bad news is currently there is no direct way from Bagan to Ngwe Saung, and, we have to travel by bus.
Travel by Bus
Currently, there are two options to travel from Bagan to Ngwe Saung: traveling from Bagan to Yangon, then from Yangon to Ngwe Saung; or, getting a direct private car/taxi to Ngwe Saung.
The first option is pretty viable, but also tiring at the same time. Since you have to travel to Yangon, taking a tour in Yangon is a nice option before going to Ngwe Saung.
To get to Yangon, you can go via airplane, train, or bus. Airplane is, no doubt, the most comfortable choice, however, it is also pretty expensive with average cost of 120 to 200 $USD. Train and bus are much more common, but it won’t be as comfortable as airplane. Some travelers may have a bad time and get in a ‘nightmarish’ ride, but that’s another story. As you arrive at Yangon, get to Hlaing Thar Yar station to take another bus ride to Ngwe Saung. If you go at night, night-bus is your best bet. Whereas if you wish to go in the morning, there are buses to Pathein. From Pathein, you have to take, yet, another short bus trip to Ngwe Saung.
The entire journey from Yangon to Ngwe Saung takes about 6 hours (not counting your ride from Bagan to Yangon). The cost for a night-bus ticket is 15,000 Kyat in average. While the morning bus’s price is normally around 10,000 Kyat; with 4,000 Kyat for bus ride from Pathein to Ngwe Saung, totally it costs 14,000 Kyat.
Travel by Taxi/Private Car
The second option, which is private car ride directly from Bagan to Ngwe Saung, is quite costly. Drivers commonly charge about $550 or more for a ride in a 4 – seater car. Therefore, it is best to travel with your friends or find some other travellers going the same route to share the cost.
In the past, the route from Bagan to Ngwe Saung is pretty rough and bumpy, which leads to not-so-comfortable ride. Nowadays, the path is better but with that high transfer price, choosing another destinations of Myanmar to explore is not a bad idea.
